Descriptions & Titles : Saviour
The use of the same titles or descriptions has undoubtedly misled many into believing that Jesus could be Almighty God. This belief overlooks the fact that the same titles and descriptions are often used in reference to others. Compare the following 'Saviour' texts.
Almighty God as Saviour
"Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope."
"This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour."
"For to this end we labor and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of them that believe." (1 Timothy 1:1, 2:3, 4:10)
"...but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour."
"But when the kindness of God our Saviour, and his love toward man, appeared..." (Titus 1:3, 3:4)
"Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour."
"Declare ye, and bring it forth; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath showed this from ancient time? who hath declared it of old? have not I, YHWH? and there is no God else besides me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides me." (Isaiah 45:15,21)
"Yet I am YHWH thy God from the land of Egypt; and thou shalt know no god but me, and besides me there is no saviour." (Hosea 13:4)
"O thou hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in the time of trouble..." (Jeremiah 14:8)
Jesus as Saviour
Jesus is also referred to as 'Saviour' because, as his name (Yeshua) implies, YHWH had clothed him with the garments of salvation.
"The Spirit of the Lord YHWH is upon me...I will greatly rejoice in YHWH, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation..." (Isaiah 61:10)
"And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And he opened the book, and found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor: He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised." (Luke 4:17-18)
Other 'Saviours' had been raised for works of redemption, though theirs had been temporary offices serving only to save physically, not spiritually. Ehud, Othniel and Jonathan were three such 'Saviours.'
"And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall belong to YHWH (Obadiah 1:21)
"And when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH, YHWH raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother." (Judges 3:9)
"But when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH, YHWH raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed." (Judges 3:15)
"And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel?" (1 Samuel 14:45)
"Salvation belongs to YHWH" (Psalm 3:8)
Observe the general delegation of authority from YHWH to the Jews - "Salvation is from the Jews" (John 4:22)
And then the particular delegation of authority to Jesus - "YHWH has clothed me with the garments of salvation"(Psalm 98:1)
YHWH delegates authority to perform his works to normal humans of his choice.
