Descriptions & Titles : The Shepherd
The use of the same titles or descriptions has undoubtedly misled many into believing that Jesus could be Almighty God. This belief overlooks the fact that the same titles and descriptions are often used in the Bible in reference to others.
Notwithstanding the arrogating of the position of 'Shepherd' by Pope John Paul II* - "The Shepherd of the Lord's whole flock is the Bishop of the Church of Rome..." - the Shepherd of the Lord's whole flock is YHWH himself:
"YHWH is my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1)
"I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord YHWH...And ye my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord YHWH." (Ezekiel. 34:15, 31)
YHVH delegates authority to men to 'shepherd' his flock and feed them with knowledge and wisdom.
"Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. In times past, even when Saul was king, it was thou that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and YHWH thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt be shepherd of my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over my people Israel. (1 Chronicles 11:1, 2)
"In all places wherein I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?" (1 Chronicles 17:6)
"...and I will give you shepherds according to my heart, who shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." (Jeremiah 3:15)
"...that saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure, even saying of Jerusalem, She shall be built; and of the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid." (Isaiah 44:28)
In addition to 'shepherds' appointed for a particular purpose, the prophet Ezekiel foretold that YHWH would one day appoint a man to represent him as Chief Shepherd of Israel.
"And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd." (Ezekiel 34:23)
Ezekiel also foretold that this Chief Shepherd would be 'smitten."
"Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith YHWH of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered..." (Zechariah 13:7)
Jesus recognised his delegated role of Chief Shepherd by quoting Zechariah 13:7:
"Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be made to stumble because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad." (Matthew 26:31)
Other authors of the New Testament also recorded this same truth:
"And when the Chief Shepherd shall be manifested, ye shall receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away." (1 Peter 5:14)
"Now the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, even our Lord Jesus..." (Hebrews 13:20)
It should be more than apparent to even the most orthodox Christian that claims for the 'deity' of Jesus are rendered absolutely ludicrous by the above verses. We can be absolutely certain, however, that almost two millennia of church misinformation, disinformation, and obfuscation will be swept away at the duly appointed time.
